Why is this the case?

The Song of Solomon

Would you want your children reading statements like this from the KJV,
"My beloved put in his hand by the hole in me, and my bowels were moved for him."
and then explaining to them what it means?

Wash hands before eating else you eat dirt from hands.

I appreciate the song of Solomon much more than Leviticus for example. But perhaps that's me.
By the way Mole, are you talking about chapter 5:4?
In the Dutch version she is talking about his hand in the hole in the door, trying to open the door, and that 'moved' her. I suspect that your version might be quite a bit more interesting though. Whatever it is I accept your interpretation!

Well actually Harrie my version says "in the door "as well but if you get a tunelling electron microscope and look at my bible it has a miniscule 9 by it and if you look up the reference in the middle column (can't remember the name of that column;scriptum, erratum, scholium?) it says "or some mss. in me" . That 1611 committee had to put it in but made it hard to find.
Oxy I'm not sure if your 'hand washing" statement is what you think Solomon is saying ,or is it criptic advice to me?

I'll shoot the messenger that give only part of the message. I am also making known that there is another way to interpret this that is quite wholesome and good. Basically, the wife is the church, the husband that just left is Jesus. The door, is the door of the bedroom.

That is very interesting. Jesus left the church, after He tried in vain to open the door to the bedroom to get to the church?
And what does that mean?

Anyway, in the next translation you should have a say in it I think!

Ok the messenger is back with the full message and a bullet proof vest.
Let me know what you think Solomon is really saying (ch5:4) in the not too well advertised alternative? Note the cross reference No 9.
Bonus question for Rev2 :Why is my answer to your question obviously the wrong one to you?

Then this is how you may read it as well?
Quote: › “My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were (in me) moved for him. “
But I think the man’s hands were still no where near were they might have liked to be, I assume? Even if the lady’s bowels were moved at the sight of his hand? (I do think the dumbo gave up way too soon...)
I’m still not sure about how those doors looked like? I imagine it something like a plank with a latch and hinges, but apparently a hole instead of a handle?
What I know from Egyptian literature, all her important papers might have been hidden right underneath the doorstep, although I’m not sure if Israelites had copied that practice. So I wonder what might have happened if this lady would have opened the door in a more timely manner?
Would he have moved her bowels really good, or would he have ran away with the property papers of her house?
That whole bowel moving worries me a bit; she sees his hand and then her bowels start moving. Was she really emotional or did she need to lose some weight real quick? Questions, questions...
But anyway, no matter some questions regarding interpretation, this is one of the few pleasing parts in the Bible.

But isn't adding "in me" (where you have inserted it) ,tautology, and just about a sin in itself? You would hardly say "my bowels that weren't in me".
Anyway I think bowels can mean heart ,words have changed meaning since the days of Frederik Hendrik stadtholder of Orange.I'll check the "word meaning ,change" section of my KJV Bible tonight.
Edit :It now tonight
Bowels can mean
1 heart ,12 references given including SofS 5:4
2 hearts Col 3:12,Phlm 7
3 affections 2Cor 6:12,Phil 2:1
4 anguish Jer 4:19
and 5 tender mercies Phil1:8

I agree, it does sound a bit funny, but that (9) appears to refer to that and it does not seem to be an unusual use of language considering the age. In the Nordic Edda you will find peculiar constructions like: “He got up from his chair and stood. He opened his mouth to speak, and he said the words...”
Still, I have no idea if that is the case here.

I expected bowels to mean ‘heart’ or ‘affections,’ but didn’t know it, thanks for the info. This seems very logical. But to me it doesn’t mean he had his hands anywhere else but that hole in the door...
It strikes me that he doesn’t call her, or that she doesn’t call him right away at the moment he has his hand in the hole. Sort of: “Honey? I’m here! All oiled up and ready, my bowels in me moving for you! Just wait a moment to open this @$#% door.”
One thing is for sure, that ‘my bowels in me are moving for you’ will never leave me for the rest of my life. Let us start using that again in these modern days, it sounds great. I will try it out with my wife tonight.

Dear moleowner,
Our Alaskan fishing trip was wonderful beyond measure. We will not lack for wonderful fish the rest of the year!
My original question was: "What is the least read book of the old testament?
What book of the old testament most often quoted in the new testament?
Why is this the case?"
I don't recall any response that you infer in your bonus question to me.
I am not certain of the correct answer myself, but a little research may indicate the answer to both questions is Psalms.
